AIR WOMEN CREATE HISTORY

Having completed a successful training at the basic parachute course a contingent of 27 parachutists performed a colourful display at the Katunakaye camp of the Sri Lanka Air Force today (15) morning. The ceremony was presided over by the Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Gunathilaka. The special feature of the display was the performance by a group of 07 Air women for the first time in the history of Sri Lanka Air Force.


Ten airmen of the Air Force two sailors of the Sri Lanka Navy, five gunners of the Air Force Regiment, 07 Female gunners of the Air Force and a medical officer took part in the display.

L.S.A.C. Hewagamage was the first ever Air women to land successfully by a parachute from MI 17 airplane. This was a unique event in the 50- year history of Sri Lanka Air Force.  All the 27 airmen wearing uniform unfolded their parachute sand leapt from a height of 3000 feet, amidst applause by the spectators.

Eight airmen leapt from a height of 6000 feet releasing a colourful smoke, adding colour  to the historic event.

Subsequently the chief guest Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Gunathilake paid tribute to the performance by pining medals. H.P.A.S. Hewagamage Flt Lt 01889 of the medical corps of the Sri Lanka Air Force was awarded the ablest parachutist.
 
Addressing the media the Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Gunathilake said only a few countries boast of female parachutists and hailed their performance as unique. He expressed the hope that this trend would continue in the future.
 
Though the performance of landing by parachutists provides a memorable sight to the spectators it gives self - confidence and ability female parachutists to perform their military duties side by side with their male colleagues.
 
Top brass of the Sri Lanka Air Force civil officers, and the relatives of the performs also participated.
