Two blood banks have been set up at the Sampathnuwara and Kebithigollewa hospitals.
The National Blood Centre has taken the measure to meet emergency requirements of blood for security personnel engaged in military operations.
The centre will also provide storage facilities for hospitals which have no blood banks.
Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva revealed this information attending a review committee meeting at the national blood centre today. The centre has the monopoly of supplying blood to private and government hospitals.
This has been largely contributed to contain the spread of epidemic diseases such as HIV/Aids and Hepatitis B. Minister De Silva said the centre conducts complete checks up on blood samples received from donators by using modern technology.
