Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka insists that no security camps have been removed from the Eastern Province
He said the government is committed to safeguard the security of the Eastern province. The commander strongly rejects some news items that were published regarding the security in the Eastern province. The government has no intention to discredit the victories achieved by the security forces. Exclusively speaking to State Radio Commander Fonseka stressed no Army camp has been removed from the Eastern province. However several STF camps established in the province have been taken to other areas. The army commander disclosed Army camps have been established instead of STF camps.
Meanwhile, commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka visited Jaffna to assess the security situation in the peninsula. Ministry of Defence says another objective of the Army Commander’s visit was to review the military operations launched against LTTE. Commander of Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, who received the visiting Army Chief, at the Palaly airport presented a full account on the security arrangements and welfare activities carried out for the civilians by the troops. Commanders of Divisions, Brigades and Units briefed the security situation in their respective areas during their meeting with Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka. Army Commander, after a thorough study of the briefings, gave further instructions to all formation commanders present on the occasion. This was the Commander's first visit to Jaffna after his India tour.
