Colombo Municipal Council’s opposition leader Vasudeva Nanayakara said yesterday he would contest the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council on the UPFA ticket only if he is made the Chief Ministerial candidate as proposed by the Socialist Alliance which supports the government He is also expected to lead the Ratnapura District list of the UPFA if he contests.

He said the decision to nominate him as UPFA’s Sabaragamuwa Chief Ministerial candidate was taken by the Socialist Alliance and was not his personal decision. "I will not contest if I am not put forward as the Chief Ministerial candidate,"

he said. The matter is to be discussed with the President soon. Mr. Nananayakkara obtained the highest number of preferential votes from the Ratnapura district at the 1994 General Elections. He was also the UPFA Mayoral candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council in 2006.
