Labour Minister Mervin Silva plans to protect journalists

Globally popular local politician Labour Minister Mervyn Silva plans to initiate an insurance scheme for the journalists in Sri Lanka. “This would protect the journalists and the media freedom of the country, he said at a press briefing held in Colombo. Speaking to media on Wednesday he said that it is important for the journalists.He said some journalists were attacked by certain elements. He stressed that the government is committed to safe guard the media freedom. But certain elements are trying to violate the media freedom.He pointed out most of journalists were attacked and recent attack was on ITN journalists.  Recently, 2 journalists from Independent Television Network were attacked opposite the UNP head Office. “We condemned this types of attacks, he said.However a number of local and international media watch dogs criticized Minister Silva’s behavior on some media institutions.He was also assaulted at an incident in State own television complex due to a verbal dispute.
