Sri Lankan appointed as Chief Justice in Seychelles

Mr. Justice Andrew Ranjan Perera has been appointed by the President of the Republic of Seychelles, James Alix Michel, as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and took the oath of office on 5th August 2008.

Justice Perera, who served the Registry of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka since 1960, was the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka from 1976. He proceeded to Seychelles in 1982 as the Master and Registrar of the Supreme Court of Seychelles, and returned in 1987.

He retired prematurely in 1990, and returned to Seychelles, to serve as the Chief Magistrate for a short time until he was elevated to the Supreme Court Bench in January 1991. He was appointed as Chief Justice after 18 ½ years service on the bench.

Justice Perera was enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on 17th January 1973, and is also a graduate in law from University of Ceylon. He is a past pupil of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, where he completed his primary education in 1958 and proceeded to the Aquinas University College to complete London ‘A’ Levels.

Justice Perera is the eldest son of the Late Mr. Andrew Perera and the late Mrs Winifred Perera of Molligoda, Wadduwa, and son-in-law of the late Mr. and Mrs. Basil Perera of Mutwal. He is married to Shiranee Perera and has two sons, Romesh and Shiran who are London Qualified graduates.
