Army deployed in Sabaragamuwa and NCP

Army has been called in quell violence and provide security for elections in the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces ahead of Saturday’s polls, Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

He said that the army has been deployed following a request from the Commissioner of Elections.

He said if the police request the assistance of the army to provide security for the conduct of the poll, the army is willing to assist.

In the recent years this is the first time the army has been called in to provide security ahead of the polls.
