UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has agreed to hand over the post of Prime Minister to Mr. Mangala Samaraweera in a future United Front government formed with the alliance of the UNP and the SLFP (M). This agreement was reached at a discussion held between the committee appointed to study issues regarding the formation of the front and Mr. Wickremasinghe.

By now several rounds of talks have been held between the two parties regarding the formation of the new front and it is understood that proposals to have a ‘national’ appearance at future elections and to use a different symbol instead of the ‘elephant’ have been discussed.

Meanwhile, Mr. S. B. Dissanayake, who had expected to become the Prime Minister under a UNP government has expressed his displeasure at the results of the discussions and has said he would join President Mahinda Rajapakse’s government if he could not resolve issues with the party leadership.
