No attempts to create a new administrative District

Minister Priyadharshna Yappa

here is no truth in the news item, which appeared in certain sections of the print media to say that the government is making preparations to create a Sinhala Administrative district between the two Tamil districts such as Trimcomalee and Mullaitivu said Minister Anura Priyadharshna Yappa at the Press conference held yesterday in the Department of Information.

The Tamil newspapers have published what the TNA leader R. Sampanthan told in the House. He said in his speech that there were attempts to create a Sinhala Administrative district uniting certain villages between the Trincomalee and Mullaitivu districts. This is a baseless news item. This is an attempt to place an obstacle over the efforts of government to build-up trust and unity between communities, the Minister said. He further quoted Minister Karu Jayasuriya’s speech in Parliament in which he said that there would be no sponsored Sinhala colonisation in the Eastern Province.

It should be remembered that when the former President Chandrika Kumaratunge was to present a proposal in parliament to solve the ethnic problem it was the same Sampanthan that she trusted to support her. But as usual “Sam” ditched her at midnight and Chandrika could not present her proposal in Parliament, as she did not have the 2/3 majority she needed to win in parliament.
