The Local Council election in the eastern province is to be held on February 29, 2008.

The bill to postpone the north east local body elections was submitted to the Supreme Court by the President for a decision on an urgent basis. When the court took up this matter for consideration, the Additional Solicitor General P.A. Ratnayake appeared on behalf of the attorney general and informed the court that the government has decided to hold the local body polls in the eastern province on February 29, 2008. The eastern province local council elections should be conducted according to the voters’ list of 2006 but the government has decided to hold the election in accordance with the 2007 voters list.

The court is to inform to the President and the Speaker whether the postponement of election is against the constitution or not.
