Full scale Provincial Council Administration in the East

A full scale Provincial Council Administration will be established in the eastern province in accordance with the 13th amendments of the constitution, said the Constitutional Affairs and National Integrity Minister DEW Gunasekara.

 

A stable situation prevails in the east and the Provincial Council Election could be held there to elect peoples representatives to take forward the development works. The local council election will be held first and the provincial council election will be held in the early part of next year, he said.

 

At the same the Supreme Court has determined that the local authorities (Special Provisions Bill) seeking to hold local government polls in the Northern Province is not contrary to the constitution. There are 33 local councils in the Northern Province. EPDP was elected uncontested to the Puthukkudiyiruppu Pradesha Sabaa of Mullaitivu district as the nomination papers submitted by the UNP and the Independent Group were rejected by the returning officer.
