The Indian Coast guards conduct search operations in the 21 islands in proximity to Sri Lanka and which come under the jurisdiction of India. Appavu, Mulitivu are few of them. The search operation is due to reports indicating the presence of LTTE cadres in these islets for arms training, the Coast Guard sources said. The Coast Guard detachments stationed at Mandapam, Rameswaram carried on the search on the 16th night. Two boats were seen escaping from the shores of the Islets and the guards had to open fire at them. The Coast Guard is using Hoover Crafts to patrol the area.
