The Sri Lankan navy destroyed a trawler loaded with arms along the western coast on Sunday, killing at least five Tamil Tiger rebels and sparking a huge explosion, the military said.

A Defence Ministry official said that Navy patrol boats fired warning shots when they spotted the trawler, but were answered by rebel fire.

The ensuing gunbattle off Mannar in northwestern Sri Lanka set off the explosion that sank the craft.

"Considering the explosion that occurred on the trawler, we believe that it was transporting a large quantity of
explosives and arms," the official said.
