Local council election in Batticaloa

The elections department has instructed the Assistant Elections Commissioner of Batticaloa district to prepare the electoral lists for the local council election.

Further the department has made a request to collect the details of the displaced and all others and to keep the list ready before the 30th of August, said the Batticaloa Assistant Election Commissioner, Krishnanandalingam.

Election will be held on the basis of the election list of 2006. There are 330, 950 voters in the Batticaloa district in accordance with the 2006 list and 12, 222 new voters are to be included to the list.

Most of the people in the Batticaloa district are displaced. It will take more time to prepare the electoral list. Very soon instructions will be sent to the grama seva officers in this regard. I have had discussions with the district secretary regarding the preparation of the list. The displaced people are entitled to cast their votes in the area where they reside presently, according to the amendments made in the election law, he said further.
