Norway’s special peace negotiator Jon Hanson Bauer has said that there are favourable opportunities for initiating peace negotiations between the Sri Lanka Government and the LTTE. Both sides are in need of peaceful settlement of issues, he told in an interview to an international media.

President Mahinda Rajapakse during his recent visit to the US met and had discussions with the representatives of Norway. They had presumably had discussions about the feasibility of peace talks. Eric Solheim reportedly told that he would visit Sri Lanka provided a conducive atmosphere prevailed for peace talks.

Eric Solheim yesterday expressed hope for peace talks in a press briefing in Norway. ‘We are available for peace negotiations in Sri Lanka. But peace cannot be forced into from outside. If there is a favourable atmosphere for peace, than I am prepared to visit Sri Lanka, he said.

We maintain direct communications with both sides. If both sides of the war want peace we will be there to provide all facilities, he said.
