Preparations are underway for local elections in the North East

The Elections Department is making all arrangements to hold local government elections in the North and East provinces.

The voters’ register in respect of 33 local bodies are being prepared in the Eastern province, said Assistant Commissioner of Elections S. Amarasiri.

Earlier nominations were cancelled as per special laws. The new dates for nominations are expected to be intimated by the Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils. The Elections Department will, on receipt of the dates, expedite matters to hold the elections, said the Assistant Commissioner.

The nominations will be entertained for 21 days from the date of declaration and the voting will take place within 5-8 weeks of the nomination.
