30 th 10324Heavy fighting is raging in Muhamalai and Nagarkovil between government troops and the LTTE. Military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said the Air Force is supporting the army.

The Brigadier said the LTTE was continuously firing artillery and mortars in the last few days towards the Muhamalai Defence Line. Last night they intensified the attacks. There was a large gathering of tiger cadres ahead of the Muhamalai and Nagarkovil Defence Lines. The troops reported this to the truce monitors. The tigers’ attempt was to attack and infiltrate the Defence Lines. The troops repulsed and counter attacked. The Brigadier said the terrorists were firing from Pooneryn and Palia. Air Force jets attacked these locations and neutralized them. Troops observed many bodies of terrorists and arms and ammunition, ahead of the Nagarkovil, Muahamalai and Kilali Defence Lines. Brig. Samarasinghe noted that troops are clearing the areas. Heavy fighting is still raging. He revealed that 22 soldiers were killed and 113 injured.
