To Contest With A Common Symbol Would Be The Proper Way

The most proper way for the opposition to contest the general election is to do it without any division and with a single symbol says renowned artist W. Jayasiri. He said a united opposition is the need of the hour due to the present situation in the country.

Speaking to the media today Mr. Jayasiri said, "The UNP has already decided to contest with the 'elephant' symbol. This is the decision of traditional UNP supporters. They feel the UNP should contest only with the 'elephant' as the symbol. There are some people in the JVP too that think the party should contest with the 'bell' symbol.

However, with all these differences there was an alliance at the presidential election. All these parties rallied around Gen. Sarath Fonseka. This caused tremors in Mahinda Rajapakse's camp. Earlier people thought Mahinda Rajapske was invincible. If all these parties that supported Gen. Fonseka at the presidential election it would be the best for the country. If all these parties, the UNP, the JVP and other parties such as Upcountry People's Front, CWC and others can come under one symbol, it would be the best for the country.

Let elephant be there. Nothing would happen to the elephant. The question is not the elephant. This is an election; an important political situation. President Mahinda Rajapakse's power base should be shaken. That would be the beginning of the end of this regime. Hence, it would be very appropriate if all these forces could come under one symbol."
