Playing fast and loose with precious lives

Amidst widespread abductions , arrests and crimes raging in the country underscoring the lawless culture in the country is the latest release two days ago of the Editor , of the Sinhala tabloid ‘Lanka’ Chandana Sirimalwatte who was arrested about a month ago for reasons unknown to himself and even the authorities who arrested him , for , he was suddenly released after one month in detention without any charges

Meanwhile ..another Journalist Ekneliyagoda , a free lancer for the Lanka e news disappeared over a month ago with neither the police nor the Govt. being able to help  his grieving family with any information whatsoever.

The past and present spate of murders , abductions and intimidations inflicted on Journalists committed with complete impunity  reflects poorly on the Govt. for , it is the Govt. which is responsible for the country’s overall administration.  Blaming the police lethargy and  the incapacity to arrest the lethal crime wave are no excuses acceptable to the people of the country  who have elected a Govt. to rule lawfully and not to ride roughshod on the crime waves and exploit the lawless situation for political ends.

The President , the highest in the hierarchy of the land himself denying any knowledge of the glaring illegality and the arrest of Sirimalwatte even after keeping him in custody on instructions from his own Ministry by his own brother Gotabaya Rajapakse, the Defense Secretary,  without any charges being filed for a month when the whole country was  infuriatingly protesting against it is a clear index that the whole administrative machinery is playing fast and loose with precious lives and families of citizens. They seem to be savoring the gaiety in the absurdity of their utterances .
