Ban Ki Moon undeterred by SL Govt.`s objections

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

UN secretary General Ban KI Moon addressing a news conference on the 16th scoffed at objections raised by SL against his decision to appoint a panel of experts to investigate alleged SL’s human rights abuses during the civil war.

He emphasized that he was within his authority in taking such a step. The panel will be appointed without delay, he added. The panel so appointed will advise me on the standards, benchmarks and parameters based on international standards. This will not in any way infringe on the sovereignty of SL, and therefore, despite SL Govt.’s objection and the non aligned countries’ letter the panel will be appointed without delay, Moon pointed out.

Incidentally, earlier, Ban Ki moon came under pressure from critics who claimed that Moon’s visit to SL, some days after the war ended constituted an endorsement of Govt.’s victory.
