170 Transferred In Ports Authority – Violation Of Election Law States Union

Despite the announcement of the general election, 170 employees of the Port Authority have been transferred violating the election law points out General Secretary of All Ceylon General Port Employees Union (ACGPEU), Chandrasiri Mahagamage. He states the reason for the transfers was purely political and the Chairman of the Authority has carried out the transfers merely to victimize those having different political beliefs.

 

Issuing a statement protesting against the illegal transfers Mr. Mahagamage states after the victory of the presidential election, obtained by rigging votes and other frauds, the Independent Workers Union has organized meeting s of employees and carries on inquiries, punishments stating publicly they have been handed over all powers of the Ports Authority.  Hence, it is evident that victimization of the employees in the authority is being carried out by the Independent Workers Union with the approval of the Minister of Ports and Aviation.

 

The announcement further demands that the government assures the right of the employees to join a trade union and maintain such a trade union which has been granted by the Constitution of the country and warns the government not to violate the right of the people to hold any political standpoint.
