A Time To Forget Symbols And Colours & Unite For Democracy
A time has come for everybody to forget about their political parties, symbols and colours and unite on behalf of democracy says Information Secretary of the JVP Vijithe Herath. He says all parties that supported Gen. Fonseka should continue to maintain their unity to safeguard democracy.
When media inquired regarding how the JVP would participate at the forthcoming general election Mr. Herath said the party view is that the general election should be contested with the combination of more groups and organizations than that cooperated for the presidential election. However, the decision by the UNP to contest under the 'elephant' symbol is the only snag for such a combination pointed out Mr. Herath.
"The Rajapakse regime is moving along an undemocratic, despotic path. This move should be stopped. The agreement we had with Gen. Fonseka was to contest the general election the way presidential election was contested with all other parties and organizations, defeat the present undemocratic regime and establish good governance.
However, the Executive committee of the UNP had taken a decision to contest under the 'elephant' symbol. They had also asked Gen. Fonseka to contest under the 'elephant' symbol. Hence, we and Gen. Fonseka finally decided to contest the election through another front if the UNP was not prepared to change their decision.
We have built such a front now. Gen. Fonseka is the leader of this front. However, we still believe that this elections should be contested with the cooperation of all those who cherish democracy," added Mr. Herath.
He further said discussions have been held with several political parties, intellectuals and renowned personalities in the society. They had expressed their agreement to the policies of the new front said Mr. Herath.
