A UNP candidate who was to contest the upcoming General Election is seeking ten million Rupees from the Anuradhapura police as compensation for the physical harm they caused him while dispersing a group of protestors recently.

In a complaint to the Human Rights Commission, UNP Provincial councilor Rohana Gamage said that he has been hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries to his foot, allegedly following a tear gas attack by the police two weeks ago.

In the complaint filed through his family, Gamage said that he is now unable to campaign for the upcoming elections as a result of his injuries. Mr. Gamage was injured on February 12 when the police were forced to use teargas to disperse a group of protestors demanding the release of General Sarath Fonseka.
