Arjuna Ranatunge , the former captain of the SL cricket team which won the world cup in 1996 ,referring to his erstwhile team mate , Sanath Jayasooriya’s entry into politics said , this does not augur well for the game of cricket , as many other cricketers will also try to do this in order to boost their position in cricket on political backing rather than on actual performance on the sporting field .

Jayasooriya who is 40 years old  is contesting the general elections under the UPFA ticket while he is still playing International cricket .

Ranatunge pointed out that he took to politics only  after retiring from the game. That did not put cricket or the country in jeopardy.

Jayasooriya’s political career has set a bad precedent . In the future , players who are discarded for poor performance will seek selection by getting on the political platform , he regretted.
