Minister Champika comes down hard on power greedy and cutout mania candidates
Addressing a JHU conference , the Minister of environment , Champika Ranawake has suddenly woken to the importance of protecting the environment and country’s natural resources just ahead of the General elections.
He says , about 300 trees have to be destroyed to put up the gigantic cutouts of each of the candidates seeking to gratify his greed for power. To produce a ton of paper to print about 100,000 posters , 30 large trees have to be axed , he added.
The Minister’s patriotism seems to be oozing at every pore just before the elections .The fact that he is also a candidate at the elections has provoked the public to ask a very relevant and a justifiable question from the Minister who could not perceive all the inordinate waste of his leaders at the last Presidential elections – whether the Minster is offering an election gundu to win his own seat , and only to resume his deep slumber like Rip Van Winkle after winning ?
What’s more ? the Minister has also only now realized, just before elections ( because he wakes up only at that time ? ) that Rs. 3.8 million is spent on salaries of politicians during the six year term , but some candidates have a budget of Rs. 380 million for their election campaign .
