SC hears IDP voting rights FR case
The Supreme Court today directed that the rules and regulation laid down by the Elections Commissioner pertaining to the voting rights of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) s during the presidential election be implemented fully.
The Court made the directive when fundamental rights application filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) was taken up for hearing this morning.
Counsel for the Petitioner I.Kanageeswaran P.C. said that during the January presidential poll, a large number of IDPs were deprived from voting due to lack of transport facilities as well as proper identification to make them eligible to vote.
The bench comprised Chief Justice Asoka De Silva, and Justices Jagath Balapatapendi and MS. Chadra Ekanayake.
