A senior official at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, said that the chief prelates of the Asgiriya and Malwatte Chapters had asked the UNP leader if Sajith Premadasa, who is hopeful of becoming the deputy leader of the party, had indeed converted from Buddhism and joined a fundamentalist Christian faction.

The chief prelates had asked this question from Ranil Wickremesinghe when he had met with them in Kandy last Saturday (5).

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and parliamentarians Lakshman Kiriella and Wijedasa Rajapakse had also participated in the event.

The UNP Leader had responded to the question by saying that he had no knowledge of the fact. However, the Theros have discussed about Sajith not visiting temples and meeting with the chief prelates.

Sources said that the chief prelates have asked the UNP leadership if it was proper to appoint a person who had betrayed his religion as a leader of a political party.
