The Railway Department has handed over the management and maintenance of the luxury train service launched from Katunayake to Colombo on June 1st to the Airport and Aviation Services Authority. The train service was launched by parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa to provide transport to Indian stars and guests who arrived in Sri Lanka to participate in the IIFA awards from the airport to Colombo.

The train service has been assigned to the Authority under the agreement that the Railway Department would be given Rs. 1,400 for every kilometer traveled.

The train that was launched by Namal and several other politicians on the 1st had been parked in the railway shed since then. The train was not used during the IIFA.

However, the Airport and Aviation Services Authority said that the train had been used to provide transport to Airport passengers from the 10th.

Although it was initially proposed to charge Rs. 2,500 for a one way trip on the intercity train, it has now been reduced to Rs. 1,500. The Airport and Aviation Services Authority says that the train service could also be used even by the Airport staff after paying the fee and that it is available seven days of the week.
