Was Major Gen. Pannipitiya given sufficient security

The Attorney General yesterday undertook to submit for the Supreme Court’s perusal all documents pertaining to steps taken by the Sri Lanka Army to grant sufficient security personnel to Major General Parakrama Pannipitiya, as recommended by the Supreme Court.Senior State Counsel, N. G. Pulle appeared for the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and the Attorney General.Once the documents are submitted, the Supreme Court will consider, whether orders have been carried out or else whether contempt charges are to be issued for breach of Supreme Court orders.In this case, Major General Pannipitiya, has said that he conducted the Thoppigala clearance. But subsequently he was removed from the office of Commander of the Eastern province and had been ordered to leave the Summit Flat, occupied by him. Although the Court ordered at an earlier date that he should be given eight security personnel with two of them selected by him, that order had not been complied with to the full, upto date.General Pannipitiya had said that he is high in the LTTE hit list and needs high security.The case is to be called again on October 23.The Bench comprised, Justice Shirani Tilakawardene, Justice P. A. Ratnayake and Justice Raja Fernando.
